500th Anniversary of Rafael Madonnas 2 Silver Coin Set
500 year ago Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (April 6 or March 28, 1483 – April 6, 1520), better known as Raphael, created two masterpieces of the High Renaissance.
The Sistine Madonna which is housed in the old masters gallery of Dresden, Germany. It was probably intended to decorate the tomb of Pope Julius II and was later donated by the monks to Augustus III of Saxony.
And the Madonna di Foligno which was executed for Sigismondo de' Conti, chamberlain to Pope Julius II. It was placed on a high altar of the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli on Capitoline Hill where Sigismondo was buried in 1512.
To celebrate this birthday both paintings are exposed this year in Dresden.
