Beethoven Frieze~ Gustav Klimt ~ Silver Coin with Amber in Frame
The artist’s remarkable masterpiece was presented in 1902 to commemorate a great composer – Beethoven.
The artwork was painted directly on plaster and was 2.15 m high and 34 m wide. It is another coin from a series that shows a piece of the entire work – a mysterious couple entwined in a loving embrace.
The scene illustrates a kiss for the whole world to see, which Beethoven adapted from the “Ode to Joy” by Friedrich Schiller and added to the final chorus of his Symphony No. 9.
