Portrait of Lady ~ Gustav Klimt ~ Silver Coin with Amber in Frame
Gustav Klimt gained fame thanks to a very decorative style; golden background, elaborate ornaments and contrasted colors, the hallmark of his individual artistic approach, were seen as the rebellion against the traditional art. Nonetheless, the academic circles of that time criticized his works as controversy. Today, the legacy of Gustav Klimt is still inspiring consecutive generations of artists.

The painting “Portrait of a Lady”, 1916-17, shows a woman in a patterned dress. An X-ray examination revealed that the work of art is an altered version of the “Portrait of a Young Woman” originally depicted with a hat and a scarf. Today the cost of the canvas, once stolen and found years later, is estimated for 66 million dollars.
